"That dwarf is back again, Armina," Gelm says, grabbing the key to the door leading to the cooling room.
"Star and stones!" Armina exclaims. "Whatever can he want with so much ale? Dwarves aren't so plentiful when he comes from."
Gelm shrugs, before turning to yell for the bottle boys to help him. "Can ask him, mistress."
"Humph," she says to herself. "Maybe I will. Depleting my stocks, he is. Buying so often. Can't have this, using too much at once."
But she's all smiles by the time she makes her way to the mews behind the inn. "Master Mîm, my most loyal customer! Out of ale again, are we? Where do you get such a thirst?"
The dwarf glowers at her. "Thieves and ruffians, they are. Eating my food, stealing my home." He stamps his foot. "And drinking my ale!"
Gelm and the bottle boys arrive with the casks and load them onto Mîm's handcart. Anyone else, and Armina would be concerned that he couldn't shift such a load. But the dwarf is like all of his kind - strong and close to the earth.
Mîm mutters something that might be a 'thank you' as he hands Armina a pouch. She knows without looking it will be full of gold and gems, a more than fair payment for her ale, quality refreshment though it might be.
The dwarf hoists the trucks on the handcart and plods down the street. Try as she might, Armina doesn't see the moment when he disappears, but he's gone between one blink and the next.
She would ponder the dwarf's odd houseguests, but there's a shout from the common room, calling for a song, and she turns away to see to her other customers.
